Former Bethlehem Catholic baseball coach Mike Grasso was known for producing a competitive program during his decades as skipper for the Golden Hawks.
Matt Corsi is building himself quite the resume as well after knocking off North Schuylkill 4-2 in last week’s District 11 4A championship.
Becahi shook off a 1-0 deficit in the fourth inning to score two runs in the frame and then add some insurance in the fifth and sixth innings to bring home their second district gold in four years.
It’s the first title since 2021 for the program, who have made the finals in three of Corsi’s four years and picked themselves up after losing in last year’s championship to Blue Mountain.
“All district titles feel amazing,” said Corsi. “It’s a great accomplishment to win any district title. To win two in four years has been amazing.”
Phil Taylor threw a complete game for the win, allowing six hits and four walks, while striking out nine. He also knocked in the first run for the Hawks in the fourth with an RBI single scoring Zach McCoy. Joey Richards then brought Taylor home with an RBI triple to give the Hawks a lead they wouldn’t relinquish. Caden Deegan added a sac fly in the fifth and Dylan Pyle crossed the plate in the sixth following a bunt by Joe Casciano to give Becahi (19-7) all the runs they needed.
After losing in the EPC final at DeSales and falling to Blue Mountain last year at the same site, coming away with a championship win at DeSales felt redeeming for the Hawks.
“This team is a super close team which makes them special,” said Corsi. “These kids work hard every year and the goal is always a district title. It means the world to me when these players attain their goals. Coach Grasso built this program on excellence, faith and love. I am proud to continue what he built.”
