Trojans beat Liberty, reach title match

The Parkland High School boys volleyball team ran through the Eastern Pennsylvania Conference tournament unscathed, winning both of its matches in the semifinal and final in straight sets, including defeating Liberty 3-0 in the semis. After earning the top seed in the District 11 3A tournament and a bye in the quarterfinal round, the Trojans squared off against the fourth-seeded Hurricanes once again in the district semifinals. This time, Liberty gave Parkland more of a match and actually won a set, but the Trojans pulled it out in four sets by scores of 25-18, 21-25, 25-17 and 25-18 last Thursday night at Catasauqua High School. Liberty put up a fight in the match, but Parkland proved to be too much. Josh Nation finished with 21 kills, two blocks, 12 digs and five aces to pace the offense. Luke Smith was not far behind as he added 10 kills, five blocks, five digs and two aces. Alex Wilby added seven kills, seven digs and two aces, while Owen Rodgers added seven kills and three blocks. Will Stiles was the point guard of the offense with 41 assists and 10 digs. Parkland, which improved its record to 17-3 overall, had another rematch in the district final, this one against the third seed, Whitehall, the team that the Trojans beat in three sets in the conference final earlier this month. The Zephyrs defeated second-seeded Emmaus in four sets by scores of 25-20, 21-25, 25-21, 25-21 in the other semifinal. For more about the championship match see next week’s Press.
