PHS girls lax team gained experience

The Parkland High School girls lacrosse team entered the 2024 season after graduating a large senior class the year before. Head coach Brittaney Costigan and her program had an influx of younger talent this season but not a lot of experience. The Trojans finished this season 6-12 overall and 2-6 in the Eastern Pennsylvania Conference. “This season was a tough one for us with a lot of young talent,” said Costigan. “We had lost a lot of seniors last year. While we did not have the record or ending we hoped for, I do believe we started to lay the ground work for our program to build off.” There were still plenty of highlights as a team and individual that Costigan highlighted. “Our Emmaus game was one of the best games we played this season,” Costigan said. “While we did not win, it did show our potential to be contenders. It was a game where the team worked well together as well. “It was a full team effort. Many of the girls came in with goals and purpose that game and I think it showed them what they are capable of as well.” From an individual standpoint, there were a number of standout performers on the field in 2024. “We had a few standout returners on our team this year,” said Costigan. “Hailey Smith in goal, Madison Roseman on defense, Addison Winfield and Milla Hahn in midfield and Gigi Leonzi and Anna Sensinger on attack. We also had quite a few new players who really stepped up, including Kendra Hovan, Kyla Smith, and Marina Galligani on defense, Abby Marquardt and Juliana Varano in midfield, Lily McAfee, Lila Temchatin and Ava Toman on attack.” The senior group consists of Gigi Leonzi, Lily McAfee, Darby Reyburn, Madi Roseman and Hailey Smith. “The senior group this year were standout players on and off the field,” Costigan said. “They were leaders in every position and on the sidelines. I think they began to envision where they believe the program can go and started to lay the groundwork of the legacy of what they are leaving behind. “Our underclassmen this year will be saying they got the opportunity to learn and play with this group and we will see the effects they had on the program for years to come.” That leaves plenty of underclassmen ready to build and improve for next season. “We have a lot of young, raw talent on the team this year and coming up,” said Costigan. “I think the group this year also has more of a clear vision of where they see the program going and the part they will play in that. They really bonded this year and I think will continue to next year. Be on the lookout for us next year.”
