Parkland advances to volleyball title match

The Parkland High School boys volleyball team is back in the postseason and is looking to continue the success that it had last year when it went unbeaten on its way to winning the Eastern Pennsylvania Conference, District 11 and PIAA state championships. The Trojans, which finished the regular season 14-3 overall and 11-1 in the conference, earned the top seed in EPCs and began the tournament with a straight set victory over fourth-seeded Liberty in the semifinal round last Thursday, by scores of 25-22, 25-21, 25-22 at Allen High School’s Sewards Gymnasium. Parkland is looking to win its third consecutive conference title. In the opening set, the Trojans, which used a balanced attack all evening, took control when Luke Smith, Alex Wilby, Brady Hayward and Owen Rodgers registered kills as part of a 6-1 run to take a 19-14 lead. Smith scored again to close the set at 25-22. The Hurricanes (13-5) went on top early in the second set, but Parkland rallied to go on top 17-13 after a kill from Hayward. Liberty kept the back-and-forth going and tied the score 20-20 before Josh Nation pushed his team back ahead with a kill and two aces. Wilby ended the set with a kill. The Trojans held a lead for most of the third set before Liberty found itself down by just one, twice, at 22-21 and 23-22, but the duo of Hayward and Nation combined for two kills to finish off the match. Parkland squared off against the third seed, Whitehall, in the championship match Wednesday. The Zephyrs gave the Trojans their only conference defeat during the regular season.
