The Northwestern girls lacrosse team picked the right time of the season to get hot.
Northwestern won five of its final six games down the stretch, including a 12-11 overtime win against Moravian Academy in the regular season finale on Monday. The string of games gave the Tigers a 7-10-0 overall record and set them as the number-three seed in the District 11 3A tournament, which gets underway next week.
The only team to beat Northwestern down the stretch was Southern Lehigh (15-2-1), which downed the Tigers 20-8 Monday night.
The Spartans will be the top seed in the 2A playoffs and will host fourth-seeded Moravian Academy (2-12-0) in the semifinals Monday evening at Emmaus High School. Northwestern will play in the other semifinal game at the same venue Monday night when they face second seeded Allentown Central Catholic (7-10-0).
While both the Lady Tigers and Vikettes finished with identical records, Central Catholic will be the higher seed based on a power ranking formula that awards points based on the strength of schedule. Playing in the EPC, Central Catholic faced higher rated opponents to give them a leg up in the rankings.
Northwestern lost to Central Catholic in mid-April in a 20-8 game at Tiger Stadium.
In last season’s tournament, the Lady Tigers were the second seed, but fell to third-seeded Moravian Academy in the semifinals. Southern Lehigh then downed the Lions in the finals to win their third straight district championship.
After the semifinals on Monday, the finals will be played next Wednesday at Lehigh University as part of a doubleheader with the 3A girls’ lacrosse championship.
