Boys lax wins four of last five games

The Northwestern Lehigh boys lacrosse team finished the regular season winning four of its last five games with the only blemish being a loss to Southern Lehigh in a 5-3 regular season finale.

Coming down the stretch, the Tigers beat Northampton and then downed both Saucon Valley and Moravian Academy in both ends of a home-and-home pair of games. The stretch of games left Northwestern with an 11-7 overall season record and the number-two seed in the district playoffs, which begin next week.

The Tigers beat Saucon Valley 22-1 at Tiger Stadium and then downed the Panthers 17-2 on the road to take the two games in that series. Northwestern beat Moravian Academy 9-8 on the road and then 15-6 at Tiger Stadium in the final regular season home game.

In the home win against Moravian, Northwestern was led by Blaine Snyder, who had five goals in the win. Stone Sosnovik had four goals and two assists and Tyler Kaas continued his impressive freshman season with three goals and an assist. Devon Hildebrand contributed two goals and assisted on four others and Michael Lagowy also netted a goal in the win.

In goal for Northwestern, Bailen Smargiassi made 11 saves.

The Central Catholic Vikings, who came out on the short end of the District 11 2A finals last season against Northwestern, will be the top seed in 2A.

The Vikings and Tigers met during the regular season and Northwestern fell to Central Catholic by a 20-6 tally, leaving both teams looking forward to a rematch this season. To get to that final, there is another step for both teams to cross.

Central Catholic (10-6) will have to host fourth-seeded Moravian Academy (6-10). Northwestern has an even tougher assignment as it faces Southern Lehigh (10-8), the team that snapped the Tigers four-game win streak to finish up the season. The Spartans are the third seed in the 2A tournament.

Both semifinal games will be played on Tuesday at Emmaus High School. The finals will be played next Thursday at Lehigh University.
