Allentown Band concert: “From Met to Broadway”

“We are so pleased to have tenor Eric Fennell and Summer Harmony Men’s Chorus join us for this concert,” says Ronald Demkee, Allentown Band Conductor. “Concert-goers will enjoy music of well-known operas in addition to great Broadway hits.”

The Allentown Band presents “From the Met to Broadway,” 3 p.m. June 2, Christ Lutheran Church, Allentown.

The program opens with the “Overture from William Tell” by Italian composer Gioachino Rossini. First performed by the Paris Opera in 1829, the opera is based on the legend of William Tell. Says Demkee, “The audience will recognize this piece as the theme song from ‘The Lone Ranger’ [television show].”

Two selections by Giacomo Puccini follow: the beautiful “Musetta’s Waltz” from the 1893-1895 opera, “La Boheme,” set in the Latin Quarter of 1840s Paris, and the romantic aria, “E lucevan le stelle,” from Puccini’s opera “Tosca,” sung by guest tenor Eric Fennell.

The concert continues with waltzes from Richard Strauss’ 1911 comic opera, “Der Rosenkavalier.”

Closing the concert’s first half are two works from Georges Bizet’s popular opera, “Carmen.” Premised on the 1845 novella, “Carmen,” by French writer Prosper Merimee, the opera tells of the downfall of Don Jose, a naïve Spanish soldier seduced by the fiery gypsy Carmen.

The band next performs “March of the Toreadors,” after which Fennell joins the musicians in a performance of “Flower Song.”

After intermission, the Allentown Band performs the music of Broadway, beginning with “Jerome Robbins Broadway,” selections from shows either directed or choreographed by Robbins.

Inspired by William Shakespeare’s “Romeo and Juliet,” the musical, “West Side Story,” was conceived by Robbins with music by Leonard Bernstein, lyrics by Stephen Sondheim and book by Arthur Laurents. Fennell presents a performance of the song, “Maria,” from the show.

From the 1964 musical, “Hello, Dolly!,” Summer Harmony Men’s Chorus, led by pianist and Conductor Andrew Lutz-Long, regales with “Before the Parade Passes By,” suggesting that people should embrace life’s opportunities before they slip away.

The concert continues with two selections from “Les Miserables,” including a medley by composer Warren Barker, and “Bring Him Home,” featuring Fennell.

Summer Harmony sings “76 Trombones” from the 1957 musical, “The Music Man.”

The concert concludes with Fennell’s performance of one of the most-recognized tenor arias, “Nessun Dorma” from the final act of Puccini’s opera, “Turandot.”

Lehigh Valley native Fennell received a Bachelor of Arts in Music from Gettysburg College and a Masters in Voice and Artist Diploma from Boston University. His debut was in a production of the opera “La Boheme.” His European debut was in Franz Lehar’s “Die Lustige Witwe” (“The Merry Widow”) and Giuseppe Verdi’s “Requiem.”

Fennell has performed in major opera houses and productions by the San Francisco Opera, Boston Lyric Opera, Chautauqua Opera, Salzburg Landestheater and Spoleto Festival USA.

Lehigh Valley-based Summer Harmony Men’s Chorus was formed in 1991. Lutz-Long is Associate Director of Music and Networking, Christ Lutheran Church, where he oversees choir programs. He is Chapel Organist, Egner Chapel, and Adjunct Professor of Organ Studies and Performance, Muhlenberg College.
