Man faces additional charges in burglaries

A Pen Argyl man, who was taken into custody in a dramatic capture in Macungie, faces additional burglary and related charges in Northampton County.

According to court documents, Shane Richard Lake, now 31, was scheduled for a preliminary hearing in Northampton County May 14.

A preliminary hearing was expected May 29.

In a news release from the office of Northampton County District Attorney Stephen Baratta, Lake was described as “arrested in connection to a string of eight burglaries, which took place throughout Pen Argyl between the dates of Nov. 28, 2023 and Dec. 6, 2023.”

Lake was taken into custody in January near Eyer Middle School after he fled from police in what began as an incident involving his alleged assault of another person.

That person reported the assault to Macungie police at the borough police department Jan. 27. The person was then taken to the hospital for treatment.

When officers arrived at a residence where Lake was known to be, he allegedly fled on foot, prompting a shelter in place order for Macungie borough residents.

The incident ended when Lake was taken into custody on a warrant from Salisbury Township Police Department.

Responding law enforcement agencies Jan. 27 also included Alburtis, and Emmaus police, Pennsylvania State Police troopers from the Fogelsville station and Upper Macungie Township and Salisbury Township police.

Lake was reportedly taken into custody after he was found in a water pipe near the school.

In the eight burglaries in Pen Argyl, Lake allegedly removed 20 firearms, including seven shotguns, three handguns, six revolvers and four rifles. Many of the firearms were collectibles, according to authorities.

Other items taken in the burglaries included jewelry, military medals, silverware “and other miscellaneous items of high value,” according to the news release.

According to court documents available May 15, Lake faces felony charges of burglary, theft, receiving stolen property and possession of firearms prohibited as well a trespassing charges in Northampton County.

“Lake is being charged with eight counts of burglary, 28 counts of theft by unlawful taking, 24 counts of receiving stolen property, 16 counts of person not to possess and one count of criminal trespass/simple trespasser,” according to the news release from Northampton County authorities.

Charges from the incident in Macungie in January include simple assault, harassment, resisting arrest and evading arrest, according to court documents.

Charges in Salisbury Township include burglary, criminal trespass, theft and receiving stolen property, according to court documents.
