Bethlehem Catholic coach Matt Corsi preaches to his players to play “Beca baseball.” The Hawks have embraced that motto all year and it’s been good enough to push them to Wednesday’s District 11 4A championship.
Becahi belted top-seeded Tamaqua 12-6 in Sunday’s semifinals to set them up with a 1:05 p.m. start on Wednesday back at DeSales where they’ll meet North Schuylkill.
“It feels great making the district finals,” said Becahi head coach Matt Corsi. “I was telling the team that this is our third district final in four years, and the year we didn’t make the final we lost in the semifinals. That means a lot to our seniors, they are the group that where freshmen when I became head coach.”
The Hawks haven’t won a district title since the spring of 2021 and have split both of their appearances under Corsi, but if they continue to swing the bat the way they have this postseason, it’ll be golden smiles for the program on Wednesday.
Becahi has scored 10 or more runs in four of their last five postseason games this season, including the EPC tournament. After falling behind 4-1 in the second inning against Tamaqua, the Hawks scored runs in four of the next five innings to roll. Five different batters knocked in runs, as Dylan Pyle led the way with two RBI and Joseph Casciano threw six innings in the win, striking out five in the process and giving up four earned runs.
After losing in last year’s district final to Blue Mountain, the Hawks have clearly played with motivation this postseason.
“This team plays with heart and hustle,” said Corsi. “This team is also a very close team which is great to see. They have a chip on their shoulder.”
And that chip has ultimately led them to play “Beca baseball.”
“That has been our motto,” Corsi said. “Don’t let other teams or fans get to us and don’t play up or down to your competition. If we play our style of baseball we feel we can compete with anyone in the state.”
