At Whitehall Manor’s Memorial Day celebration, held May 27 at the 1177 Sixth St., Whitehall, site, residents marked the holiday with a concert by Great Notations, who sang patriotic songs such as “You’re A Grand Old Flag,” “Battle Hymn of the Republic,” “Anchor’s Away” among others.
Joe Birienger and Beverly Diamond, leaders of the choir, spoke to attendees during the performance.
During a concert break, Diamond offered the residents, their family members and staff a patriotic message about preserving democracy and remembering our freedoms that are granted by democracy. She thanked all for attending the concert and also thanked all veterans who served the country selflessly to protect our freedoms.
Nya Cruz, Whitehall Manor activities director, coordinated the gathering and kept busy getting ready for snack breaks during the concert. Ever smiling, she was a bundle of energy, cheerfully assisting residents and other attendees.
Birienger, Great Notations choir leader and a Whitehall Manor resident, spoke to the hall attendees, paying homage to residents Jim and Mildred. Both were original Great Notations choir members who died since last year’s Memorial Day program.
The choir dedicated and sang two songs, one for each. Both songs were well received by the attendees who nearly filled the hall.
The inspiring and joyful event concluded with Great Notations ending its concert with the quintessential patriotic American song “God Bless America.”
