Cornhole fundraising event is success

Knights of Columbus Council 4050 of Queenship of Mary Roman Catholic Church in Northampton and St. Joseph the Worker Roman Catholic Church in Orefield teamed up to raise funds for Whitehall-Coplay Hunger Initiative and Parkland Cares with a cornhole tournament May 18 at Egypt Memorial Park, Hillcrest Lane and Curt Simmons Drive.

A large number of people signed up to participate in the competition, intended to help two organizations that address food insecurity on a local level. The games were close and exciting, and the results were electronically recorded.

The Knights of Columbus volunteers staffed the event, selling tickets for food and assisting as needed. Volunteers from St. Joseph the Worker assisted in coordinating the event. Mike Godorov and John Fitzpatrick, leaders of the event, were very satisfied with the turnout and the collegiality of the competition.

Food and refreshments included turkey barbecue, hot dogs, cookies, brownies, a variety of chips, soda and water. HiJinx Brewing Company, of Allentown, had a representative at the event to sell craft beer. Visit hijinxbrewing.com for information.

Tyler DiCicco, of Northampton, participated on the Kleckner and Sons team. His wife, Brianna, and daughter Kaia were there to cheer him on.

Whitehall-Coplay Hunger Initiative’s mission is “to alleviate food insecurity in Whitehall and Coplay.” Visit whitehallcoplayhungerinitiative.org for more information and to support its work.

Parkland Cares’ mission is striving to feed and serve every member of the community affected by and suffering from hunger. Visit parklandcaresfp.org for information about its services and how to support the mission.

Cornhole is a lawn game where players take turns throwing fabric bean bags at a board with a hole in it. Points are scored based on whether the bag lands on the board or goes in the hole.

The bags thrown used to be filled with corn kernels - hence, the name cornhole. The American Cornhole Organization developed bags filled with plastic resin or other materials that maintain a consistent weight and shape without deforming. Cornhole has developed into a friendly competitive sport.
