Project approved despite pedestrian concerns

Hanover Engineering received approval for boundary line adjustment for their development project off Drift Court by a vote of 2-1 during the May 6 Bethlehem Township Commissioners meeting.

Community Development Director Amanda Jensen said, “There’s a panhandle section that is between the residential lot and the state highway that they would like to acquire as their own.”

Jensen confirmed to the board the proposal received approval from the Planning Commission.

Commissioner John Gallagher voiced his concerns about how pedestrian-friendly the boundary line adjustment would be, considering the waivers needed to meet Hanover Engineering’s request.

In voting against the resolution, Gallagher said he felt the resolution goes against the spirit of the Act of Transportation Plan to make the township more pedestrian-friendly.

“If you don’t have a sidewalk and you are forced to walk in the street, and you take your life in your hands,” he told the board.

A standard traffic easement agreement was signed between the township and Jake Vida Management Corp of PA for a traffic signal at Easton Avenue and the Giant Shopping Center.

The ordinance pertaining to Bethlehem Township to adopt the 2018 edition of the International Fire Code, discussed at length at a previous meeting, was adopted.

The board gave support to a grant application submitted by Easton Area Joint Sewer Authority, the City of Easton and the Nature Nurture Center to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency.

If approved, the grant would allow the use of fats, oil and greases (FOG) to be received and combined for a heat and power project at the Easton Area Joint Sewer Authority wastewater treatment plant.

Peggy Salvatore and Alison Diefenderfer were appointed to the Bethlehem Area Public Library Advisory Board.
