Cinco de Mayo at The Wooden Match
Like a piñata full of goodies, The Wooden Match was bursting with fun as it fired up the celebration of Cinco de Mayo with a weekend block party May 3-5.
Live music, food and beer trucks, cigars, tequila bar, High Noon Bar, games and more were on the menu for the event in the parking lot that was family friendly, so kids and dogs were invited to join in the celebration.
“We’re always happy to help the community and support small businesses,” Andrew Calderon, The Wooden Match general manager, said.
Cinco de Mayo is the celebration of the Mexican victory over French forces at the Battle of Puebla May 5, 1862.
Hungry guests could nosh on yummy options from a variety of food trucks, including Taco Town, Hang Over’s Café, Mel & Mons Sweet Scoop and Buns On The Go. Vendors included Bizzle’s Bites Dog Treats and Toys, Battle Borne, Bethlum Shop and WZZO Radio Station.
The Outreach Team, nonpartisan field canvassers, were there to get voters registered for the upcoming election and update their contact information, such as last name and address, if necessary.
“We started doing this a month ago and have had a pretty good response,” said Outreach Team member Dylan. “We’ve been to a lot of places in Bethlehem and Allentown that are high traffic areas.”
Chrissy Maag, owner of Bethlum Shop, was on hand with Bethlum merchandise, including her newest creation, “The Bars of Bethlum PA,” available as prints and T-shirts.
“I just started making them a few weeks ago,” Maag said. She took some of the photos herself, and others were contributed by the bars, which she made into sketches.
Maag noted many of the bars mentioned other bars they thought should be included.
“They are doing very well – they’re a conversation piece,” Maag said. “College kids especially like them.”
Bethlum is a nod to how many people pronounce the city’s name.
Maag sells items such as T-shirts, hoodies, knit hats and coffee mugs from her Etsy shopetsy.com/shop/Bethlumshop, as well as setting up at events like Musikfest, Celtic Classic and St. Patrick’s Day at The Wooden Match and pop-ups in stores.
Heart Headed and Toga Party Band kept the Cinco de Mayo music rolling May 3. DJ Throw-down of the Lehigh Valley, hosted by DJ Jamal Knight and Friends, provided the soundtrack for the festivities May 4, and Sunday Funday with DJ Jamal Knight and Friends spinning tunes May 5 wrapped up the event.
