Whitehall High School’s track and field team competed at the District XI Class 3A Track and Field Championships on May 14 and 15 at Blue Mountain High School where Zephyr thrower Tommy Lloyd rose to the top of the podium as the repeat district champ in the javelin throw with a distance of 191-07.
Tessa Hopkins won the silver medal in pole vault with a height of 10-06.00.
“It feels awesome. I waited all four years to get this. I’m so excited,” Hopkins said. “I beat my high school goal, and I was really close to 11-00. I really smashed into the pole and pushed it as hard as I could to get the slingshot up because before, I was just straight-vaulting. It’s a totally different feeling when you’re bending the pole than when you’re not, so that gave me the extra to go up.”
Kaden Weaver was also a silver medalist, placing second in shot put with a throw of 48-08.00.
“I’ve been doing this for three years, and I really never thought I’d have the opportunity to make states, and this year with it being top two, I knew I had a chance, and I was able to do my best and actually have a good throw today,” Weaver said. “I actually stayed in for once, but I was in second right away. My first throw was my good throw, and when you get a first good throw, it sets the tone for the day.”
Ian Thomas earned the fourth-place medal in long jump with a personal record of 22-07.00.
All four Zephyrs will compete at the PIAA Class 3A State Track and Field Championships this weekend at Shippensburg University.
