Jenkins golden, states next

Catasauqua High School’s track and field team competed at the District XI Class 2A Track and Field Championships on May 14 and 15 at Blue Mountain High School where Catty sprinter Hailey Jenkins was crowned the district’s 100 meter dash champion with a time of 12.28.

Jenkins also raced in the 200 meter dash and won the silver medal with a time of 25.63.

Jenkins will compete in both events at the PIAA Class 2A State Track and Field Championships this weekend at Shippensburg University.

Joining Jenkins will be Abigail Antipas, Florenni DeJesus Bido, and Alivia Bear, who, along with Jenkins, placed second in the 4x400 relay with a time of 4:11.80.

Jenkins’ brother Hamaad also qualified for the state meet in the 200 meter dash with a time of 22.81.

Catty’s boys 4x100 relay team of Manny Bolmer, Peter LaPointe, Jeremiah Cofie, and Jenkins were district bronze medalists with their time of 44.36.

Josiah Lafond won a fourth-place medal in the 300 meter hurdles.

“It feels great, especially from how I did last year until now, and I’ve got my whole family here,” said Lafond. “I felt way more explosive this week, and I also PR’ed (personal record).”

Lafond’s time was 41.98.

“One of the challenges is getting over the hurdles because it’s a lot of technique. You have to work on your form a lot. It’s really easy to fall too, and it helped me to improve after that,” he said. “Jack Inglis (Southern Lehigh) had told me to definitely count your steps because I didn’t do that before. I was just going with the flow. He said to try and make sure you do eight in between each, and I practiced that, and now I got a PR.”

Catasauqua’s girls 4x100 relay team of Julia Harth, Antipas, Kayla Davis, and Jenkins were also fourth-place district medalists with their time of 51.51.
