Supervisors oppose market zoning variance

Allen Township Board of Supervisors met March 12 to discuss zoning relief for a proposed DG market on Cherryville Road. DG Market is owned by Dollar General and carries produce, meat and other foods not typically found in dollar stores.

The developers of the project - PennTex Ventures - sought a variance that would allow them to increase the square footage of the building from 10,000 to 12,400.

The property is located in the neighborhood commercial zoning district, which only allows small retail spaces up to 10,000 square feet. The increase to 12,400 square feet would make it a large retail space.

“We have zoning for a reason. If you stop and look at the grand scheme of things, it is a 20% increase,” Supervisor Dale Hassler said.

“I don’t see how we can support something that goes against our zoning ordinance,” Supervisor Gary Behler said.

He also worried it would set a precedent, and the next person might come asking for a 50% increase in square footage.

Supervisors voted unanimously to oppose the zoning variance, but the final decision lies with the zoning hearing board.

Supervisors next meet 6 p.m. May 14 in the township building, 4714 Indian Trail Road.
