Zephs knock Emmaus out of volleyball playoffs

The Emmaus High School boys volleyball team had a run of unbeaten play in the Eastern Pennsylvania Conference all through the regular season. The Hornets won their first 11 conference matches before falling in the season finale to rival Parkland.

That left the two teams tied atop the EPC standings, with the Trojans taking the top seed in the conference tournament due to head-to-head results.

Emmaus earned two seed and received a bye into the semifinal round. The Hornets matched up with Whitehall, the three seed and straight set victors over sixth-seeded Northampton in the quarterfinal round.

The Hornets fell to the Zephyrs 3-1 in the semifinal round by scores of 25-17, 18-25, 19-25 and 29-31 last Thursday night at Allen High School. Emmaus took both matches over the Zephs during the regular season.

Last week the Hornets took the opening set. Lucas Mondin sealed the set with a kill at 25-17.

The Zephyrs responded in a big way and came out on top in the second and third sets.

The fourth set was a wild, back-and-forth set between the two teams. Whitehall then had a slim lead of 24-23 in the fourth set. A block from Colin Holden, kept the Green Hornets in it and forced an extended set. The Green Hornets came within a point of forcing a fifth and deciding set on four different occasions, taking the lead at 26-25, 27-26, 28-27 and 29-28 off three points from Jametric Harris and a kill by Mondin. Whitehall then rattled off two straight points to go on top 30-29 before Emmaus got called for a back row attack to end it.

Emmaus will now await its seeding and opponent in the District 11 3A tournament, which will begin next week.
