Trojans beat WWL in nine innings
The Parkland High School baseball team bounced back from its first two-game losing streak of the season with a win over Pleasant Valley Monday.
The Trojans (12-4 overall; 9-3 East Penn Conference) beat the Bears 10-0 in six innings after falling to Whitehall and Freedom in their previous two games.
Ben Weninger allowed Pleasant Valley just three hits over 5 1/3 innings while striking out seven Bears and walking two to get the win. Nathan Bartholomew pitched a hitless 2/3 of an inning, striking out two batters.
Trojan leadoff batter Will Dobil went 2 for 3 while scoring three times and driving in a run against PV. Louis Inserra was also 2 for 3 and had three RBIs in the game. Dylan Fili had two hits while scoring twice and driving in a run.
Parkland suffered a 10-0 loss to Freedom on Friday as two Patriot pitchers combined to limit the Trojans to four hits in the game.
Whitehall beat Parkland 7-2 last Wednesday, April 24, to snap a five-game PHS win streak. The Trojans had just five hits and committed two errors in the loss. Andrew Klotz and Dylan Fili had two hits each against Whitehall.
Parkland edged Wilson West Lawn 8-7 Saturday. The Bulldogs took a 7-4 lead with three runs in the sixth inning, but the Trojans answered with three runs in the bottom of the inning to tie the game then won in the ninth.
Inserra led off the Parkland ninth inning with a walk and Noah Trager replaced the Trojan catcher as a courtesy runner. After taking second on an error, Trager scored on pinch hitter Gavin Mohry’s walk-off single.
Cole Brunner went 3 for 4 against Wilson while scoring twice and driving in a run. Fili was 2 for 2 with a run and an RBI. Dobil (2 for 2, 2 R) and Klotz (2 for 4, RBI) also had multiple hits in the game.
Weninger allowed one Bulldog hit and no earned runs over 3 2/3 innings while striking out six Bulldogs and walking four. Mackaden Parsell took the mound to start the seventh inning and shut down Wilson over the final three stanzas, allowing no hits or walks in an efficient 36-pitch outing.
As of Monday evening, Parkland had just three games remaining in the regular season (Tuesday vs. Northampton; Thursday at Emmaus; and Monday, May 6 at Central Catholic).
The Trojans still have a shot at the top seed for the league playoffs as they trail Pocono Mountain East (11-3; 10-1), Nazareth (12-3; 9-2), Liberty (12-4; 10-2) and Emmaus (10-6; 10-2) in the league standings.
Parkland is second in the District 11 Class 6A rankings behind Nazareth and just ahead of Liberty. The league playoffs are slated to begin Thursday, May 9.
