Track team earns 12 medals

Northampton High School’s track and field team competed at the Eastern Pennsylvania Conference Track and Field Championships on May 7 and 8 at Whitehall High School where the Konkrete Kids earned 12 medals in nine events.

Silver medals were awarded to Andrew Szeplaki in high jump with a jump of 6-05.00 and in pole vault with a jump of 13-03.00.

Samuel Hayes won a bronze medal in pole vault with a jump of 12-09.00.

Alexa Wiland was the bronze medalist in javelin with a throw of 109-03.

“I didn’t go in expecting to place because I wasn’t up there on my last throw of the regular season, but I was excited to throw, and I knew I could throw farther than I did,” Wiland said. “It feels pretty good.”

Wiland’s best throw came on her final attempt.

“My coach kept telling me to straighten my arm out and not bend it, like, sidearm it, and that helped me a lot, and that got me to my last throw which made me place third,” she said.

Elias Spencer won a bronze medal in the discus throw.

“I was aiming for a medal, but I had a really rough day,” Spencer said. “Then I tried to relax and that seemed to allow me to connect the spin and throw further.”

Spencer’s first throw in the final round was his best at 129-00.

“I was seeded pretty low, and I switched my mentality and tried to calm myself, and then it just clicked,” he said.

Anne Beenders tied with two others for a silver medal in the high jump with a jump of 5-01.00.

Fourth-place medals were awarded to Victoria Phillips in the 300 meter hurdles with a time of 48.84, and Andrew Whitman in the 400 meter run with a time of 51.53.

Northampton’s boys 4x800 relay team also placed fourth with a time of 8:23.11.

Fifth-place finishes went to Tristen Pinnock in the triple jump with a jump of 44-02.75 and Brady Dolak in the 400 meter run with a time of 51.61.
