Thompson golden in discus
Bethlehem Catholic, Freedom, and Liberty’s track and field teams competed at the Eastern Pennsylvania Conference Track and Field Championships on May 7 and 8 at Whitehall High School.
Liberty senior and first-time thrower Jordan Thompson reached the top of the podium stand with her gold-medal performance in the discus throw.
“It was really great,” she said. “I was having trouble getting my arm around, so I was focused on getting my blocking arm around, and that helped me stay wide open and get a long throw. Just being able to come out and advance every meet has been super cool.”
Thompson, a lifelong basketball player, threw a distance of 97-00 on her final throw.
“I’ve been a basketball player for so long and was doing AAU in the spring, but I had nothing to do because AAU ends in 11th grade, so I was like, why don’t I just try track? I’ve always wanted to try, and I’ve never done it. I’ve never been in this environment before,” Thompson said.
Liberty teammate Anthony Otero won the silver medal in long jump with a distance of 22-08.00.
“It feels good. I’ve been dreaming about this, coming out here, and doing my thing,” Otero said. “Coming into it, I was kind of nervous, but I knew my potential so I locked it in, talked to myself, and got through it. I actually just changed my steps before this meet to get to where I’m at.”
Hurricane distance runner Katie Drabouski won a fourth-place medal for the 3200 meter run with a time of 11:36.92.
The Freedom Patriots came away with seven medals from the conference meet.
Patriot sprinter Aaron Beete won two silvers: one for the 100 meter dash with a time of 10.96 and one for he 200 meter dash with a time of 22.23.
“I think my race was really good,” said Beete, regarding the 100. “I knew the people next to me, to the left and the right. Very good competition, so I knew I had to fight for it. I still have a lot to do for districts, and I feel like my best is yet to come.”
Bronze medals were awarded to Amare Duboise in the 110 hurdles with a time of 15.02, Dylan Boyle in the 3200 meter run with a time of 9:48.17, and Britt Brooks for the triple jump with a distance of 45.04.
Freedom teammate Shacree Colwell received a fourth-place medal for the triple jump with a distance of 45-02.50, and Cameron Kashner took fourth place in pole vault with a jump of 11-09.00.
Bethlehem Catholic distance runner Mekhi Britt won the silver medal in the 800 meter run.
“It feels good. I waited a long time for this, and hard work really pays off,” he said.
Britt made a huge jump from being seeded eighth to winning second place.
“It gives me some confidence because I’ve been running really fast in workouts, and now I’m proving myself,” Britt said. “I went out fast, I hung with the top two guys, and I see Gio (Mastromonaco, Nazareth) in the distance, and I was like, I need to get as close to him as possible. I pushed as hard as I could, and I was able to go past the Emmaus kid (Jared Petre). It was a good race. I’m happy with it. I had a bad race in the mile today, and I wanted to prove to myself and everyone else what I’m capable of, and I think I did that.”
Also from Bethlehem Catholic, Robert Williams was the bronze medalist in the 200 meter dash with a time of 22.47.
