PHS honors college-bound athletes
The Parkland High School Athletic Department held its annual College Media Day to honor senior athletes who are going on to play college sports.
Four dozen Trojans were recognized at the event.
“It’s a cool tradition,” said PHS senior Trey Tremba, who is headed to the U.S. Military Academy at West Point to play football. “I watched my brother’s two years ago. I like how it gets all the seniors together and you get to celebrate everyone moving on to the next level.”
Tremba, whose brother plays football at Franklin and Marshall College, was one of several Trojan athletes who are following in the footsteps of their siblings.
Gigi Leonzi, who is headed to the University of Pittsburgh for lacrosse, follows her sister sisters Jenna (St. Joe’s soccer) and Maeve (Ursinus lacrosse).
“Division I was always my goal and playing in the ACC is a great honor” said Gigi Leonzi, one of 14 Trojans headed to Division I colleges. “I’m so grateful to play at the highest level possible. It’s something I’m really excited to do to push myself.”
Also heading to a Division I school is field hockey player Aurora Gery, who committed to Michigan during her junior year. She helped the Trojans improve each season and was part of a class of field hockey players who made the program better over their four years.
“Starting freshman year with the covid year was a little hard,” said Gery. “We’ve worked toward growing our program and we have a really strong middle school team coming up and through SYA we have a lot of girls that are really interested in playing and I think our team will continue to grow and continue to be better.”
Davidson-bound basketball player Nick Coval and his teammates also left their mark on a program. They reached this year’s state title game and Coval leaves Parkland as the all-time leading scorer.
“I had a great four years here,” he said. “I met a lot of great people, kids I’ve known since kindergarten and even before that. Saying goodbye is going to be hard, but we’re all going our separate ways and I think we’re all on the right path to success. It’s disappointing but at the same time it’s also very exciting.”
