Parkland volleyball wins four straight matches

The Parkland High School boys volleyball team had a successful week last week, winning all four of its matches, all in straight sets.

The Trojans defeated Pocono Mountain East at home last Monday, April 15, and then took down Allen on the road on Wednesday, both Eastern Pennsylvania Conference matches. They then topped the ninth-ranked team in the state in Pennridge in a nonconference match on Friday. On Monday, Parkland took down Governor Mifflin.

“We were able to get everyone some match court time against Pocono Mountain East and Allen, which always helps with the team morale at this time of year,” said head coach Scott Trumbauer. “To end the week by going on the road and beating a state-ranked, and consistent District One powerhouse Pennridge, really helped the guys get back on track.

“It was our cleanest match of the year and we’re hoping it is a blueprint for the rest of our matches. We learned a lot in the loss to Whitehall a few weeks ago, but have continued to push forward.”

With those victories, Parkland improved its overall record to 9-2 overall and 7-1 in the conference.

“So far, the season is going well,” Trumbauer said. “The guys are constantly pushing themselves and adjusting the lineup changes as time has gone on.

“Some of the changes are because of injuries so we are still trying to find out the most efficient lineup. We’ve responded well to adversity a few times, which has helped the team come together and fight together.”

The win over the Cardinals came by scores of 25-9, 25-7 and 25-21. Nick Bauer led the attack with eight kills and had eight digs.

Luke Smith tallied six kills and two digs. Owen Rodgers added five kills. Kumayl Soonasra finished with 12 digs and two assists. Will Stiles had 30 assists and eight digs.

The scores in the victory over the Canaries were 25-8, 25-19, 25-9. Bauer and Rogers led the way offensively with six kills each. Defensively, Smith added four blocks, Rodgers added three blocks and Fred Patton and Ahmad Jaffer added seven and eight digs, respectively.

The Trojans took down the Rams by scores of 25-21, 25-16, 25-21 and then they beat the Lions by scores of 25-20, 25-14 and 25-22.

“Luke Smith has continued to be our most efficient and productive offensive weapon,” Trumbauer said. “He’s leading us with 86 kills and 29 blocks so far this season.

Kumayl Soonasra and Ahmad Jaffer have been incredible defensively all year. Together, they have been providing a lot of frustration to opposing offenses and have been putting our offense in great situations in serve receive.

“Owen Rodgers has been providing us with a gigantic block against opposing outside hitters and really stepped up his offensive productivity since returning from injury and the basketball season.

Will Stiles has been guiding the offense all season and has worked hard on getting more consistent for his hitters.

Nick Bauer was inserted into the lineup last week and has added a very much-needed sense of consistent play while quietly producing a lot of points for us.”

Parkland hosted Pocono Mountain West in a conference match this past Tuesday and is at Nazareth on Thursday. The Trojans will then welcome Northampton to Parkland High School next Monday.
