NWL girls lax is making playoff push

The Northwestern girls lacrosse team is making a late-season push to lock up a spot in the District 11 playoffs.

For the first time this season, Northwestern has won back-to-back games and has raised it season record to 5-9 with four games left on the schedule. A minimum of four teams qualify for districts with Northwestern currently holding the third spot in the pecking order.

The Tigers traveled to Northampton and picked up a 15-9 win over the Konkrete Kids (3-13) last Friday.

Junior Olivia Costa led the way with eight goals and had help from four others players who scored goals in the win. Classmates Cara Thomas and Sydney Wright combined for five goals with Costa picking up three and Wright adding two. Junior Oliva Spatz and freshman Ella Collins both put a goal on the board for the Tigers.

The Tigers got the second of their two wins when they traveled to Saucon Valley (2-9) and downed the Panthers 14-7. Wright led the scoring barrage when she netted five goals in the game to lead all scorers. Thomas and Spatz got in on the scoring with Thomas contributing three goals and Spatz picking up two.

Sophomore Mykaela Yanders also scored twice in the win and freshman Olivia Fagan added a goal, while Ella Collins was credited with an assist.

The wins have moved the Tigers from battling with Saucon Valley for the third spot to nearly securing third and having a shot at reaching second if they can overtake Allentown Central Catholic (5-10).

The late portion of the schedule is interesting because it has Northwestern Lehigh alternating games against Saucon Valley and Moravian Academy over a four game stretch. The season wraps up on May 13 when the Tigers face Southern Lehigh (9-1-1) at Tiger Stadium.

Up next is the first meeting of the season against Moravian Academy (1-10) before the rematches against the Panthers and Vikettes leading up to the season finale.

A win in any of the remaining games would clinch a spot in districts for Northwestern.
