McClain, Poll hat tricks help Hornets top Nazareth
The Emmaus High School girls lacrosse team had its most successful week of the regular season so far last week, winning all three of its games that it played for its longest win streak of the season thus far.
The Hornets defeated Freedom 15-2 last Monday and then took down Nazareth in a closer game, 13-10, at home on Thursday for two Eastern Pennsylvania Conference victories. They closed out the week with a 9-4 nonconference win at Governor Mifflin on Saturday.
The week was welcoming to head coach Roxann Betz.
“We have been working hard all season to build chemistry on the field,” said Betz. “We started off with an extremely difficult schedule and we have a very strong nonleague schedule that has prepared us to grow and learn about our strengths and weaknesses.
“The girls were challenged early in the season with the strength of our schedule. That pushed them to play with intensity and grit and never give up. Lately the girls have really been connecting well and that has led the team to several wins.”
In the win over the Blue Eagles, both Bri McClain and Jordyn Poll finished with three goals with the former adding two assists. Rylie Poll recorded two goals and an assist. Melea Weber, Sarah Gross, Sofia Isaksson, Abby DiComes and Brooke Peterson all found the back of the net once. Alani Shotwell finished with 11 saves in net.
In the victory against the Lions, McClain once again led the way with three goals. Isaksson and Peterson both had two goals and Gross and Poll rounded out the scoring with a goal apiece. Shotwell had 11 saves.
“Alani Shotwell has had some fantastic games where she has made many amazing saves to keep us in games and give us the opportunity to win,” said Betz. “Our draw control percentage has been improving and we owe that to Jordyn Poll, Olivia Schmidt, Bri McClain, and Rylie Poll.”
Emmaus improved its overall record to 9-6 and is 4-2 in the conference. The Hornets conclude the regular season on Monday. They were at Northampton this past Monday and host Parkland tonight before welcoming Central Bucks West on Monday night for the season finale.
“I want to see the girls to continue to build chemistry and believe in one another,” Betz said. “We can win any game when we play together as a team and keep the mentality to play with intensity and grit.”
