Lozada earns CL silver medal

Salisbury sophomore Steven Lozada finished his second season as a pole vaulter by earning a silver medal at last week’s Colonial League Track and Field Championships.

Lozada was seeded fourth in the event with a season-best height of 11 feet, 4 inches. He increased that by over a foot at leagues, which was held last Tuesday and Wednesday at Whitehall High School.

With a goal of reaching 12 feet at the championship meet, Lozada got his opportunity when he cleared 11-9 on his second attempt and the bar was raised by six inches.

“Goal was to get 12,” he said. “The way it went, I landed at 12-3 instead of going at 12. Then once we got 12-3 we went to 12-6 and we got that.

“It was really good to PR twice.”

Senior Mitchell Davis of Saucon Valley won the event at 14-0, while Pen Argyl senior Scott Lamareaux was third at 11-9.

Lozada began pole vaulting just over a year ago when Falcon pole vault coach Alex Hess recommended he give it a try.

“He convinced me to pole vault last year,” said Lozada. “It was just a thrill. It’s a thrill to keep getting better and go higher in the air. It’s just on you. That’s how track is.”

Lozada made leagues as a freshman but didn’t make a height at the meet in 2023. He trained in the offseason at Philly Jumps Club and became one of the top pole vaulters in the league this year with two more seasons left in his high school career.

“Next year trying to get 13 feet and trying to be close to 14 by the end of the year,” he said of his future goals.

While he would be among the favorites to earn a medal at this week’s District 11 Championships, a family trip will prevent Lozada from competing this week when he could attempt to qualify for the state championship meet.

Lozada also placed third in triple jump at leagues, leaping 42 feet, 1/4 inch for a medal, which went to the top four finishers in each event.

Salisbury’s Jairo Suarez, a league medalist in hurdles last year, finished just off the medal stand in fifth place last week in the 110-meter hurdles. The senior ran a 15.75 in the finals after a time of 17.15 in prelims.

The Salisbury High School track and field teams’ regular season came to an abrupt on Tuesday, April 30 as the last meet on the schedule was shortened due to storms moving through Slatington during the meet at Northern Lehigh High School.

The meet was permanently suspended with the Falcons falling to Northern Lehigh and Notre Dame Green Pond.

The Falcon boys team lost 48 1/2-241/2 to the Bulldogs and 61-12 to the Crusaders. The Salisbury girls team fell 51-29 to Northern Lehigh and 73-17 to Notre Dame.

Kendra Morgan (100) and Paige Ziegenfus (pole vault) won events for the Falcons at the meet.
