Falcon tennis caps successful season
The Salisbury High School boys tennis team concluded a very successful 2024 spring season last week.
The Falcons finished 8-4 overall and 7-2 in the Colonial League, with some student-athletes medaling at leagues and others qualifying for and competing at the District 11 2A Tournament.
Falcon head coach Gregg Laub was pleased with the performances of his players on the court this season.
“It was a great season overall,” said Laub. “The team really came together and played great tennis. They got better each and every practice and match and really took on coaching well and wanted to be the best version of themselves they could be.
“We were very strong this year. The kids have been playing together for years and it really showed. Every year they came out stronger. They took it a lot more seriously this year, knowing it was going to be their last time on the court. It meant a lot to them.”
The fifth-seeded Falcons fell to the fourth seed, Blue Mountain, 4-1 in the district quarterfinal round back on April 29 to conclude the year.
Nolan Gredja, who played No. 1 singles for the team the past three seasons, competed as the seventh seed in district singles and took his first-round matchup against Central Catholic’s Matt Keenan to a thrilling three sets before falling 6-2, 5-7, 0-6.
Blaine Berger and Ahmed Suleiman, along with Han Kloosterman and Ian Young qualified for district doubles, but both lost in the First Round.
Some records of note in singles include Gredja going 9-4, Jacob Knerr going 8-2 and Christian Marinos going 7-6. In doubles action, records were Berger/Suleiman going 9-3 and Kloosterman/Young going 7-2.
There were many different things that stuck out to Laub that made him proud to coach the group. There was more success this season than in previous years. But when asked to mention one, he had one in mind.
“The highlight of the season was Nolan Gredja winning bronze in leagues and Ian Young and Han Kloosterman winning silver in leagues,” said Laub.
Seven seniors will graduate from this year’s team, including Berger, Grejda, Kloosterman, Knerr, Suleiman, Young and Anthony To.
Out of the main lineup, just Marinos and Connor Leavy are expected back.
“Only two of my seven players are not seniors, so next year will be a building year,” Laub said. “I have to do a lot of recruiting for the team for next season. I have three returning so I’m going to have to fill at least four more shoes. Hopefully more kids will be interested in playing.”
