Emmaus softball routs Parkland
The Emmaus High School softball team was riding a season-long four-game win streak into last week and continued the run with three more victories, all home games against Eastern Pennsylvania Conference opponents. All three wins were double-digit margins.
The Hornets defeated Pocono Mountain East 12-2 last Monday and then took down Central Catholic 13-0 the following day. They concluded the week with a 14-4 victory over rival Parkland on Thursday to extend their win streak to seven overall.
Against the Cardinals, Emmaus scored three runs in the first, five in the second and four in the third to go up by 10 after three and finished it off in five innings.
Brianna Amey, Molly Yard, Sadie Haefeli, Emma Kozy and Abigail Derr did all of the hitting and each finished with two hits, with Amey, Haefeli and Kozy all added three RBIs, while Derr tacked on two. Kozy earned the win inside the circle, throwing five innings and allowing two unearned runs, striking out three.
The Hornets used two innings to account for all of their runs as they brought around five in the bottom of the second and eight more in the fourth with another five-inning game.
Emmaus trailed 4-0 against the Trojans heading into the bottom of the third inning, but answered with three runs that frame, three more the next two and five in the sixth to take care of business and end the game early.
A number of players had multiple hits, including Haefeli with a career-best five RBI to go along with a 4-for-4 effort at the plate. Yard also accounted for four hits, scored four runs and drove in two, while Taylor Bruckler was 3-for-4 with two RBI.
Amey had two hits, including a three-run home run in the fourth inning that gave Emmaus the lead for good. Taylor Gitski and Autumn Held, along with Derr all added two hits.
Held recorded the win in the circle, giving up four early runs but then settling down to not allow a run the rest of the way. The right-hander scattered five hits while striking out five, including the 100th of her career.
Emmaus, which improved its record to 16-3 overall and is now 12-3 in the conference, finished off the regular season on the road at Whitehall this past Monday. A victory would earn the Hornets a top-two seed in the conference tournament.
