Freedom’s softball team defeated Bethlehem Catholic for the second time in three weeks with a 16-6 victory on April 30 at Freedom.
The game ended in the bottom of the fifth inning after Maia D’Amico scored the Patriots’ final run in a rundown.
“As soon as the ball was hit, I had a good jump off the base. I was going around third, hard, and I was a little too late to hold back, so I had to work with it. It was a close play, so just hearing I was safe was a huge relief,” D’Amico said.
“It was pretty nerve wracking, but I knew I had to score that last run to end the game,” said D’Amico. “It was pretty fun, I’d say.”
Namelia Duro was credited with the RBI, her third of the game.
Bethlehem Catholic third baseman Sarah Banko’s grand slam to center field gave the Golden Hawks a 6-3 lead in the third inning, but the Patriots scored six runs in the bottom of the third.
D’Amico’s RBI single to center tied the game, and Duro, Madison Glick, and Brooke Rummel followed with base hits to make the score 9-6.
Five more runs in the bottom of the fifth inning, sparked by Daniela Guzzo’s 2-out double to right center, sealed the game for the Pates.
Duro was the winning pitcher as Becahi went through all of its pitchers in the loss.
“We had the outside corner today on the plate, so we wanted to keep working that,” said Freedom coach Michele Laubach. “We know their top four hitters can put the ball out, and we slipped up on that, so we wanted to make sure we weren’t slipping with any pitches over the plate.”
Becahi pitcher Hailey Pyle had a solo home run in the first inning for the Hawks.
