Curtain Rises: “Pippin,” “The Prom” now fantastic

Two Lehigh Valley theater troupes are opening coming-of-age musicals.

There’s “magic to do” when Civic Theatre of Allentown opens “Pippin,” May 3 - 19, Nineteenth Street Theatre.

Star of the Day Event Productions presents “The Prom,” May 3 - 12, St. John’s United Church of Christ, Emmaus.

“Pippin” is by four-time Grammy winner and three-time Oscar winner Stephen Schwartz.

Prince Pippin (Patrick Mertz) is in search of the secret to happiness and fulfillment. The musical uses the premise of a mysterious performance troupe, led by the Leading Player (Mariel Letourneau), to tell the story and is known for breaking the “fourth wall” (whereby actors are in direct-address to audiences).

Pippin’s father King Charlemagne (Armand Reiser) wants his son to follow in his footsteps as a courageous, ruthless crusader. Pippin finds this nearly impossible and runs away, only to find the fair Catherine (Sam Levisay) who may be the answer to his prayers, or not.

Catherine has a precocious son, Theo (Cashton Morrow and Colton Pile in double-casting), who helps Pippin realize there are more important things in life than meaningless riches, glory and sex.

Helping Pippin find his way is his feisty grandmother Berthe (JoAnn Wilchek Basist), who gives him advice about music. Meanwhile, his stepmother Fastrada (Kimberly Mertz) and her son Lewis (John Capocasale) plot to remove Charlemagne as king to further their ambitions.

“Pippin,” premiering on Broadway in 1973, was nominated for 11 Tony Awards, winning nine Tonys. The Broadway revival in 2013 was nominated for 10 Tony Awards and won four Tonys.

Memorable songs include “Magic to Do,” “Corner of the Sky,” “No Time at All” and “Spread a Little Sunshine.”

The cast includes Jackie Appel, Shannon Cornish, Ashleigh Markin, Marcell McKenzie, Jaedon Muhl, Nate Rosario, Ali Santos, Jessica Schafer, Julie Burchfield, Olivia Emens, Justan Parker Fields, Jordan Frantz, Caitlin McDermott, Nina Metrick, Andrew Shephard, Marie Ann Sutera, Andy Van Antwerp and Alyssa Weber.

Civic’s “Pippin” is directed by Deena Lin, who is recreating Bob Fosse’s original choreography.

Rebecca Pieper is music director.

Michael McDonald, nominated for a Tony Award for his costume design for “Hair,” is costume designer.

The May 8 performance is pay-what-you-will.
