The Seed Farm to host a plant sale May 11, 12

The Seed Farm, 5854 Vera Cruz Road will welcome plant enthusiasts to its 10th annual Spring Plant Sale 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. May 11 and 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. May 12.

The sale, a fundraiser for the farm, will feature more than 200 varieties of vegetable, herb, flower and native perennial transplants ready for purchase.

Farmers from The Seed Farm’s Farm Business Incubator Program will have a variety of their products for sale as well, including African, African-American and Afro-Caribbean heirloom vegetable seeds, specialty flowers ready for planting and decorative planters.

There are volunteer opportunities for the sale as well. Past opportunities have included helping with customer service on sale days, restocking plants during the sale and helping with parking.

Also on May 12, The Seed Farm will offer two workshop sessions on how to build a rain barrel.

Sessions will be held 11 a.m. to noon and noon to 1 p.m.

Attendees will learn how to construct a rain barrel, hear about the importance of stormwater management and best practices, the anatomy of a rain barrel, maintenance tips and how to properly install a barrel to collect water. No prior experience is necessary to participate in the workshops. The Upper Milford Historical Society will present a talk by Mike Jesberger at the society’s program 7 p.m. May 30 at the Upper Milford Township municipal center, 5671 Chestnut St.

Jesberger’s talk, titled “The Road to Valley Forge,” will take listeners into the Continental Army in the fall of 1777.

The Southern Lehigh Library, the home library for Lower Milford Township residents, will welcome shoppers to its Books, Baked Goods and Bedding Plants Sale, also known as the “3Bs Sale,” 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. May 4 at the library, 3200 Preston Lane, Center Valley.

The Friends of the Southern Lehigh Library will host the presentation “Gardening for Birds and Butterflies” 7 p.m. May 22 at the library.

Led by Barbara Malt of the Lehigh Valley Audubon Society, the presentation will offer attendees insight into how to attract more birds and butterflies by creating a healthy backyard habitat.

Other library programs include a variety of story times, opportunities to read with therapy dogs, play dates and music performances.

Upper Milford Township residents are invited to participate in the township’s yard waste collection program May 6 through May 10.

Residents must purchase a yard waste pick up sticker for each container or bundle of yard waste items to be collected. There is a cost for each sticker.

Acceptable items for collection include leaves, tree and plant trimmings, tree limbs and branches less than 4 feet long and 4 inches in diameter as well as garden and flower bed materials.

Acceptable items must be placed in open containers no larger than 32 gallons with a total weight of less than 50 pounds. Limbs and branches must be bundled. A new sticker must be fastened to each container or bundle. The stickers will be removed or otherwise voided after one use.

A farmers market is held at the township building 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturdays May through November.

The next meeting of the Lower Milford Township board of supervisors is scheduled 6:30 p.m. May 16 at the township building, 7607 Chestnut Hill Church Road.

The Upper Milford Township board of supervisors will meet 7 p.m. May 2 and May 16 at the township building, 5671 Chestnut St.

Lower and Upper Milford township offices will be closed May 27 in observance of Memorial Day.
