Bath group holds kids’ fishing contest
Bath Area Fish Committee held its annual kids’ fishing contest April 27 along the Monocacy Creek that runs behind Bath Republican Club on Chestnut Street. The well-attended contest was sure to create lasting memories for the participants.
The weather was perfect, which contributed to the family fun. The contest was for youth up to age 15, with a four-fish limit per participant. Young anglers could not wade into the water and could not use spinners.
More than 400 trout were stocked, with 20 of them tagged. The young anglers who caught a tagged fish won a prize.
The 429 trout purchased by the committee were provided by Sand Spring Trout Hatchery, 324 Sand Spring Road, Jim Thorpe. Call 570-778-5206 for information.
Committee President Christine Fehr, Vice President Ken Haldaman, Treasurer Pete Lalik and Secretary Paul Weber were on hand as volunteers to ensure the contest ran smoothly.
Patrick Fogle and Katelynn Koch brought their three kids from Bath and caught a selection of brown, brook and rainbow trout. It was suggested there might be a fish fry for dinner at the Fogle home.
Jenny Juarbe, of Bath, taught her son, Carlos, fishing basics as she assisted him on how to bait the hook, cast and hold the rod. Both had smiles on their faces as Carlos angled for a trout.
Refreshments were available throughout the day. A number of the kids laid down their fishing rods when it was announced the cheeseburgers were ready to eat.
Bath Area Fish Committee was founded in 1954. Lalik said the committee has held the kids’ fishing contest for 70 years.
The group is seeking volunteers and donations to keep this important family and fishing enthusiast organization viable.
