BETHLEHEM AREA SD

STUDENT SPOTLIGHT: Khrystyna Horda is in fifth grade at James Buchanan ES. Khrystyna came from Ukraine in the Spring, speaking little to no English. She quickly adjusted to the school environment. By being proactive and beginning with the end in mind, she thrived in English Language acquisition. She is an enthusiastic learner who enjoys school. Her positive attitude in the classroom is contagious. She shows initiative and looks for new ways to get involved in the school community.

STAFF SPOTLIGHT: Jeffrey Meila is a fifth grade teacher at Governor Wolf ES. Meila is an exceptional fifth grade teacher. He finds the potential in all of his students and finds ways for them to succeed. We appreciate his positive attitude and willingness to always go the extra mile for all the Governor Wolf Roadrunners and the BASD community.

ALUMNI SPOTLIGHT: Terri Neifert graduated from Liberty HS in 1982. Terri is a model, and was featured on the cover of IRK magazine. She works as a volunteer at Community Action Committee of the Lehigh Valley, and part-time at AARP -SCSEP. After graduation, Terri lived and worked in Tokyo, Barcelona and Paris. She attended Legigh Carbon Community College, and was elected Phi Theta Kappa.

SPECIAL OLYMPICS TRACK AND FIELD: Come cheer on our local athletes at Liberty HS May 2. Concessions will be available.

TEACHER APPRECIATION WEEK: Teacher Appreciation Week is coming up, May 6-10.

ALL-CITY ELEMENTARY BAND & ORCHESTRA CONCERT: At Nitschmann MS, May 9, 7 p.m.

STUDENT ART EXHIBIT AT THE ROTUNDA: The Bethlehem Area School District will be exhibiting a student art exhibition at the Bethlehem Rotunda Gallery through May 14. The Rotunda Gallery is located at 10 E. Church Street. Gallery hours are Monday to Friday from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m..

BASD VACCINE PROGRAM: The vaccine clinic for children is typically held every Tuesday from 8:30 to 10:30 a.m. Appointments are required. Please contact your school nurse to assist you with scheduling an appointment.

VOLUNTEER OPPORTUNITIES

BAPL TEEN ADVISORY COMMITEE: Earn Community Service hours, meet other teens, and help the library! At the main branch on Chuch St. we are having two Teen Advisory Board meetings, May 7 and 21, 4:15-5:30 p.m. The Southside will have its meeting May 23, 4 to 5 p.m.

NEIGHBORHOOD VOLUNTEERS NEEDED: Better Blocks for Bethlehem are seeking Southwest Bethlehem neighbors to sit on their front porches from 8:30 to 8:55 a.m. and 3:40 to 4:05 p.m. to look after our elementary students as they journey to and from Fountain Hill ES.

ANIMAL VOLUNTEERS NEEDED: Last Chance Ranch in Quakertown is seeking volunteers to prepare animal food, walk dogs, cage/kennel cleaning, enrichment, vet transportation and events. FAMILY ENGAGEMENT SESSION ON DATING VIOLENCE: Turning Point of Lehigh Valley will be coming to Charter Arts for a Family Engagement Session May 2 at 6 p.m. to discuss their program, and raise awareness on the subject of teen dating violence and the services that they offer cost-free. At this event, Turning Point will also present two Charter Arts students with awards for their poster contest which tackles these themes they will be discussing. KNIGHTS OF COLUMBUS BOOK FAIR: The Knights of Columbus Council 15682, of Sacred Heart of Jesus Catholic Church, are sponsoring a book fair featuring gently used books, CDs, DVDs, and more for the whole family the first Sunday of the month through November from 8 a.m. to noon. The Book Fair will be located in the basement of the old Sacred Heart Church, 1817 First St, and Freemansburg Avenue in Miller Heights.
