PHS softball looks to start a new win streak
Earlier this week, the Parkland High School softball team had been sporting a two-game losing streak, including a setback against rival Emmaus. The Trojans ended that skid with a one-run victory at Easton Tuesday afternoon.
Parkland fell to the Hornets 9-2 last Wednesday and was defeated by Freedom 12-2 this past Monday. The Trojans bounced back with a 10-9 victory over the Red Rovers the next day to start a new win streak.
Against Emmaus, it was Parkland that actually took the opening lead, scoring a run in both the bottom of the first inning and bottom of the third. The Hornets, however, answered with a three-run top of the fourth inning to take a 3-2 lead.
Emmaus extended its lead with a six-run, sixth inning.
Parkland’s Allison Hunsberger and Maria Moore both had a hit and an RBI against the Hornets. Amelia Dawson, Anna Belletieri and Addison Fritzinger had one hit each.
Just as they did against Emmaus, the Trojans got on the scoreboard first against the Patriots, scoring a run in the top of the first inning. But Freedom quickly answered with a five-run, bottom-half and then added six more in the third. Parkland got one back in the final inning, the fifth, of a 10-run game.
Belletieri finished with three hits and scored two runs. Hunsberger tallied two hits and Emma Kushner and Moore both added a hit. Fritzinger contributed an RBI.
In the victory over Easton, Parkland scored early and often to put itself out in front, recording three runs in the top of the first, two in the second and four in the third. The Red Rovers recorded five runs throughout the first two innings and through four innings the Trojans were out in front 9-5.
Parkland tacked on an important insurance run in the fifth and then held on as Easton scored twice in both the bottom of the fifth and bottom of the seventh innings.
Hunsberger, Dawson, Fritzinger and Ami Patel all finished with two hits with Patel and Fritzinger both adding two RBIs and Hunsberger one. Morgan Stuardi, Moore and Elizabeth Pinkham each had one RBI. Fritzinger and Aubrey Wilson both made appearances inside the circle and Wilson earned the victory.
Parkland, which improved to 5-3 overall and 5-2 in the conference, has two conference games and a road nonconference game to end the week. The Trojans hosted Pocono Mountain West on Wednesday afternoon and then welcome Central Catholic to town on Thursday. They are at Wilson on Saturday before hosting Allen on Monday.
