Pate doubles teams medal

Two of Freedom’s doubles pairs, coached by Matt Potts, were medal winners at the Eastern Pennsylvania Conference Boys Tennis Tournament on April 19 at Freedom High School.

Matt Davis and Hardeep Sandhu were the No. 2 doubles bronze medalists after winning the consolation match, 8-6, over Allentown Central Catholic’s Ian Abbadessa and Aryaan Chauhan.

“This is my first medal, so it means a lot,” said Sandhu. “It was 4-1 but we just made dumb misses, missing overheads at the net, and we were kind of tired after our other two matches, but we were serving well, coming up to the net, and had a few aces.”

The Patriots’ first match against Pleasant Valley’s Roman Steurer and Chris Lanier was an 8-7 (7-3) victory for the pair before losing to Parkland’s Ojas Karandikar and Yechan Cho, 6-10.

“We played Parkland in the season after that Liberty match the next day, and we did lose, so we knew it was going to be our toughest match of the tournament. We were trying to assess them and trying to get an early lead but unfortunately, they got an early lead. It was 4-1, and then we started picking up our pace. At the end of the pro set, we played pretty well, but it was just too late,” said Davis, who also earned his first tennis medal. “It’s pretty impressive.”

Joe Siessmayer and Angel ‘Manny’ Suarez were the No. 3 doubles bronze medalists after winning the consolation match, 8-3, over Northampton’s Chace Roland and Max Kochan.

“This is my first season. I didn’t expect to place this high. I was hoping we could maybe get top five. Yeah, I didn’t think we were gonna get third,” said Suarez. “It feels great. We kind of adjust to each other in the middle of the game, and we’re really good at that. That’s why we play a lot better in second and third sets.”

Siessmayer and Suarez lost to Parkland’s Ryan Wu and Matt Ringold, 2-10, in the semifinal, but won the first match of the day against Allentown Central Catholic’s Thomas Dzik and Alex Germik, 8-3.

“Because I’ve been playing for so long, I’m able to identify things to help us come back later, and Manny’s really good at executing on those tips,” Siessmayer said. “This is my third season, and the past two years I was playing exhibition. I never had a doubles partner that I meshed well with. I mesh really well with Manny, and we did really well this year. I think we only had three losses in the regular season, and I think we worked really well together as a doubles team. My first time in EPCs, and I got a medal.”
