Hornet softball team clinches playoff berth
Emmaus High School softball head coach Richard Giering wants to see more consistency and intensity with the regular season concluding within the next two weeks and then postseason play ramping up after that.
“I want us to be more consistent with our play, and that starts with our defense,” said Giering. “We need to make sure our defense is solid behind [pitcher Autumn Held]. If it is, that will take us to where we want to go because we have been hitting well, it just hasn’t been consistent with our defense.”
Since March 21, the Hornets (11-3 overall; 7-3 East Penn Conference) have won 11 of their last 12 games.
The team has already clinched a district playoff berth and will likely host league and district playoff games in the first round of each tournament.
Emmaus 10-runned Bethlehem Catholic 17-7 last Tuesday, but then fell at Liberty 12-4 the next day. On Thursday, the Hornets downed Whitehall 6-4 and concluded the busy week with a 4-0 win over East Stroudsburg South Saturday.
“It was a good week for us,” Giering said. “We’ve been playing good ball lately and the girls have been learning and improving every game.”
Emmaus put up 10 runs in the top of the first against the Golden Hawks and the game was never close. Brianna Amey went 4-for-4 with two RBIs and scored three runs. Held, Molly Yard, Sadie Haefeli, Emma Kozy, Taylor Gitski and Abigail Derr all had two hits with Derr adding three RBIs and Held two. Held also earned the win inside the circle.
The Hornets took a 4-1 lead with a four-run top of the fourth inning against the Hurricanes, but then the home team recorded seven runs in the bottom-half of the fourth to take control. Amey, Kozy and Gitski all finished with two hits for Emmaus, with Amey contributing two RBIs.
Emmaus scored three runs in the bottom of the first in the game with the Zephyrs, and after they answered with two in the fourth, added two back to go on top 5-2 in the fifth. The Hornets held on late after a potential comeback bid. Once again, Amey, Kozy and Gitski paced the lineup with two hits apiece, with Gitski adding two RBIs. Kozy recorded the victory inside the circle.
The Hornets batters had one runner come home in the first, second, fifth and sixth innings and used the arm of starting pitcher Held to win the game. Amey recorded three hits and both Yard and Kozy had two.
Emmaus hosted Northampton in an important conference game this past Monday and then are at Allen Wednesday.
“We have the big game with Northampton this week,” said Giering. “We really want to win the division and have a top seed in conference and district tournaments. It starts with that game.”
