EHS boys lacrosse wins eight straight

The Emmaus High School boys lacrosse team continued its winning ways with four victories last week, and only one was particularly close.

The Hornets began the week with a one-goal victory over Eastern Pennsylvania Conference foe Freedom, 12-11, with a goal coming just a little over two minutes left to play. The next day, they went out of conference and defeated Moravian Academy, 14-6. Last Thursday, Emmaus downed EPC opponent Liberty 15-7 and followed that with a 14-7 triumph at Southern Lehigh on Saturday in the annual Crosse Out Cancer event.

The Patriots (8-3, 4-3) actually took a lead after the first quarter, scoring two of the three goals in that period. But Emmaus responded in a higher scoring second quarter, taking a 6-5 advantage into halftime. Freedom then outscored Emmaus 5-4 in the third and the score was tied 10-10 going into the final frame. Another tie at 11-11 came with just about 7:30 remaining and then Marcus Puentes scored a goal with 2:06 to play, which proved to be the game-winner.

Will Barber, who led the offense with four goals and two assists, recorded his 200th career goal in the contest. Kaleb Mains netted a hat trick and both Puentes and Gabe Chies tallied two goals with the former contributing an assist. Liam Rooney rounded out the scoring with a goal and had an assist. Michael Chies and Jewlien Torres both dished out an assist. Sam Rainford finished with 19 saves and Logan Schissler also had one.

In the win over the Spartans, the first half was neck-and-neck as the two teams were tied 5-5 at halftime. But Emmaus came out firing after the intermission and outscored Southern Lehigh 9-2 in the second half to win.

Mains led the attack with five goals. Barber recorded four goals and three assists. Rooney tallied two goals and three assists. Michael Chies, Gabe Chies and Torres each had a goal. Rainford made 10 saves.

Emmaus has won eight straight games and improved its overall record to 12-1, remains unbeaten at 6-0 in the conference.

The Hornets hosted Bethlehem Catholic in conference action this past Tuesday and are at Nazareth Wednesday night in another EPC game. They have the weekend off and are back in action on Monday night when they welcome Northampton to Memorial Field.
