The Lady Tigers opened the season with a win over Northampton and things seemed promising until a five-game slide disrupted the optimistic view of the season. Northwestern (2-6) was able to stem that streak of losses as it battled Liberty (4-6) and came out on top 16-14.
Olivia Costa led the way in the win over the Hurricanes with five goals and an assist in the win. Two other players, junior Cara Thomas and sophomore Mykaela Yanders also had multiple goals with each scoring three times with Thomas also adding an assist. Junior Olivia Spatz also scored for the Tigers as did a pair of freshmen players, Ella Collins, and Olivia Fagan.
Helping to set up the offense was having a distinct edge in draw controls in the game as Fagan led the way with 13 draw controls while Thomas had three and Costa chipped in with two draw controls in the game.
In goal, Emma Yanders made eight saves for Northwestern Lehigh.
The momentum of the win was short-lived as Allentown Central Catholic (2-6) was next up on the schedule and defeated the Tigers 16-7.
Northwestern fell to Nazareth 15-6 Tuesday. Costa scored four goals in the loss to the Blue Eagles, which are 9-2 overall this season.
The upcoming schedule includes matchups against some of the top teams in the East Penn Conference as Northwestern, which has already played EPC leader Pleasant Valley, along with EPC members Libety and Emmaus, has Parkland (4-6) this week before facing Easton (7-1) and Freedom (6-2) next week.
