DIERUFF: “Cabaret (1998 Version)”

The spotlight’s on Berlin’s Kit Kat Klub with “Cabaret (1998 Version),” 7 p.m. April 25, 26, 27, auditorium, Dieruff High School, 815 N. Irving St., Allentown.

Director-Producer-Scenic Designer Kim Carson is aided by Choreographer-Assistant Director Jaedon Muhl, Assistant Producer Will Morris, Music Director Sebastian Paff, Pit Director Nicholas Conti and Lighting and Sound Designer Anthony Forchielli of City Entertainment Systems.

The plot revolves around British flapper Sally Bowles, American writer Clifford Bradshaw and Kit Kat Klub’s Master of Ceremonies during the political instability of the Weimar Republic.

With music by John Kander, lyrics by Fred Ebb and book by Joe Masteroff, the musical is based on the 1951 play, “I Am a Camera,” by John Van Druten and the 1955 film of the same title, which were adapted from Christopher Isherwood’s 1939 novel, “Goodbye to Berlin.”

The original 1966 Broadway production won eight Tony Awards out of 11 Tony nominations. The 1987 Broadway revival received four Tony Award nominations. The 1998 Broadway revival scored four Tony Awards out of 10 Tony nominations. The 2014 Broadway revival received two Tony nominations.

A 1972 film of the same title received 10 Academy Award nominations, winning eight Oscars.

Musical numbers include “Willkommen,” “Maybe This Time,” “Money,” “Married” and the title song, “Cabaret.”
