“Rodgers & Hammerstein’s Oklahoma!” canters to the stage, 6:30 p.m. April 18, 19, 20; 2 p.m. April 21, auditorium, Saucon Valley High School, 2100 Polk Valley Road, Hellertown.
Director Lex Donatelli is aided by Assistant Directors Kendra Schessler and Calista Cavanaugh, Choreographer Kendra Schessler, Vocal Director Tori Miller and Stage Managers Izzy Zellers and Sarah Russ. Set design is by Koray Girton.
With music by Richard Rodgers and lyrics and book by Oscar Hammerstein II, the musical is based on “Green Grow the Lilacs” by playwright Lynn Riggs.
Premiering in 1943, the original Broadway production received a Special Pulitzer Prize in 1944 and a 1993 Special Tony Award (50th Anniversary). There were four Broadway revivals, starting in 1951. The 1979 Broadway revival garnered two Tony Award nominations. One Tony Award of seven Tony nominations went to the 2002 Broadway revival. The 2019 Broadway revival scored two Tony Awards out of eight Tony nominations.
The 1955 American film adaptation received two Academy Awards of four Oscar nominations.
Memorable songs include “Oh, What a Beautiful Mornin,’” “The Surrey with the Fringe on Top,” “I Cain’t Say No,” “Many a New Day” and “Oklahoma!”
