SHS softball searches for season’s second win

Once the rain stopped last week, the Salisbury softball team was able to get in a couple of games against Palmerton and Wilson, with both games being on the road. Salisbury fell to the Blue Bombers 9-0 on Friday and then fell at Wilson 8-4 the following day.

Against Palmerton (3-1, 5-1), the Falcons ran into one of the better pitchers in the area in senior Carly Gaffney, who was able to hold Salisbury (0-4 Colonial, 1-4 overall) to just one hit in the game. That hit was a two-out single from freshman Madison Peifer, who singled through the middle in the top of the fourth.

The bats came alive against Wilson (3-1, 3-1) as Salisbury collected 10 hits in the game but fell to the Lady Warriors.

Ironically, it was not the bats that put together a two-out rally in the top of the second to get Salisbury on the board first. Instead, some patience at the plate brought in two runs as Tessa Kemmerer was hit by a pitch and Peifer, Ava Grube, Beth Carney and Riley Knecht all drew walks. Carney and Knecht both drive on a run with their walks.

Wilson tied the game with two runs off in the bottom of the fourth and Salisbury came right back to get a run in the fifth and again, the damage came with two outs in the inning.

Amelia Swoyer doubled to right to drive in Taylor Wagner, who had reached on a fielder’s choice, giving the Lady Falcons a 3-2 edge in the game.

The Warriors broke the game open in the fifth and sixth to lead 8-3 before the Falcons added a run in the top of the seventh when Jenna Swoyer walked with one out. Wagner followed with a single and Amelia Swoyer walked to load the bases with one out.

Kemmerer dropped in a bloop single to bring home a run and leave the bases loaded, but the Warriors were able to get out of the jam with a strikeout and a pop-fly.

Carney finished the game 3-for-5 with a walk and an RBI and Jenna Swoyer contributed two hits and a walk and also scored a run in the game.

Carney allowed four earned runs over 5 1/3 innings of work and recorded three strikeouts for Salisbury and Kemmerer threw 2/3 of an inning in relief without allowing a base runner.

Salisbury has games scheduled against Catasauqua (0-3, 1-3), Bangor (1-3, 1-4), and Notre Dame – Green Pond (4-1, 4-2) over the next week.
