Falcons stay unbeaten in league play
The Falcon baseball team had a busy few days last week, playing games both Friday and Saturday and then a third game on Monday to help make up for some of the games lost to rain last week.
All three games were Colonial League games and all three went into the win column for Salisbury as the Falcons downed Palmerton 11-3, Wilson 5-1 and Catasauqua 12-3.
Against Palmerton, the third inning started with the two teams tied 2-2 and broke open the game with four runs in the top of the third.
The Falcons played some small ball with singles from Tom Lovelidge, Michael Stauffer, and Jake Bucchin to open the inning. One out later, a fielder’s choice brought home Stauffer and left runners on second and third with two outs before Jake Zellin and Caleb Gonzalez both singled to put the Falcons up 6-2.
Fogel and Zellin picked up singles in the top of the seventh to start another four-run rally for the Falcons. Salisbury used an error by the Bombers to bring in one run and two more scored on a single by Dominic Garcia to make it 10-3 before Stauffer drew a bases-loaded walk to bring in the fourth run of the inning for the Falcons.
Austin Spisszak cruised through seven innings on the mound for Salisbury, allowing just two hits and striking out eight batters. None of the Palmerton runs were earned as the Falcons made three fielding errors and Palmerton had six defensive miscues.
The following day, Lovelidge gave Salisbury another complete game win on the mound as he allowed just six hits and one earned run against Wilson in a 5-1 Salisbury win. Six different players collected a hit for the Falcons and Spisszak scored two runs in the win.
After a day off, Lovelidge opened the week with another big game, this time at the plate.
The senior picked up three hits and an RBI in the win over Catasauqua and also scored twice. Down 2-1, the Falcons added three third-inning runs as Markus Jones led off with a walk and Nate Nunez followed with a single.
With Lovelidge at the plate, two wild pitches brought home Jones before Lovelidge grounded out to third to plate the second run of the inning. The final run of the inning scored on a double from Spisszak that brought home Bucchin, who had reached on a fielder’s choice.
With a 4-3 lead going to the bottom of the fifth, Salisbury scored eight runs in two innings to put the game away. The five-run fifth was helped along by three Rough Riders errors, a wild pitch, and a passed ball. With bases loaded and two outs in the sixth, Fogel singled to bring in one run and another scored on a passed ball.
The Falcons improved to 6-1 overall with the win. They are 5-0 in league play and in first place in the West Division where Northwestern Lehigh (3-1) is in second place and Southern Lehigh (1-1) in third.
