Bear looking to make her mark in track

Alivia Bear understands what’s ahead of her, and she wants to make the most of it.

The senior already is enjoying her final season as a member of the Catasauqua track team. Bear will begin the season as the school record holder in the 3,200 (12.08.52), and she has her sights set on breaking the 800 mark held by 2021 grad Lexi Rushatz (2:31.35).

So far, it has been a good start.

“Track is going really well,” said Bear. “I’m happy with how the first few meets have gone. We’re all definitely still getting stronger and I’m looking forward to seeing how much time I can shave off by the end of the season.

“My goals are to get personal records in all of my events and to set the school record for the 800 which I was one second off doing last season.”

Head coach Kyle Rusnock is confident Bear can have a strong campaign. Bear was second in the 3,200 and 10th in the 1,600 at districts last season. She was 47th at states last year.

Her best this season has been 2:36 in the 800, and 5:44 in the 1,600.

“Alivia has earned everything she has accomplished,” said Rusnock. “She has been one of the hardest workers in the program.

“She has her goals in mind for this season, and I am confident she can reach them. Alivia has been running well in the early going, and she should get better as the season goes along.”

In the team’s last meet against Southern Lehigh, Bear was third in both the 800 (2:37) and the 1,600 (5:44).

Other Roughies who were among top three finishers in events on the girls’ side were Hailey Jenkins, first, 100 (12.4), second, 400 (1:02.24) Ava Smith, first, 3,200 (13:04); Julia Harth, third 100 hurdles (18:74); Abigial Antipas, third, long jump (16:06.50); Lauren DeLong, first, shot put (30-03), second, discus (30.03.1); Jade Rodriguez, second, javelin (74-07.2), and Kadince Waldron, third (68-09).

On the boys’ side, it was Josiah LaFond, first, 110 hurdles (16.64), and second, 300 hurdles (43.04); Jonathan Cordon-Pinto, third 110 hurdles (19.24); Joshua Rodriguez, first discus (114-03), and third, shot put (33-05), Braden Bartholomew, second, javelin (113-04), and Evan Reed, second, 800 (2:15).
