The Easter Bunny hopped off a Coplay Fire Department truck and into the Coplay Borough Recreation and Welfare Association’s annual community egg hunt March 30 to the delight of the young participants.
Lines of kids and family members stood waiting for the signal to begin the hunt, held on the grounds of St. Peter Roman Catholic Church, 4 S. Fifth St. There was a mad dash by hunters seeking eggs, particularly the prize eggs.
Gunner and Archer Schoemaker, of Coplay, patiently waited with their parents before their 5-6 age group hunt. Rick Hess, Recreation and Welfare Association president, was all smiles as he and his seasoned team of volunteers put together a fun and memorable event for the kids, parents and families who attended. Some of the volunteers joining Hess included Karen and Jeffry Deutsch, Christine Mann, Carol Burker, Bob Hauke, Faye Schreiner and Andrea Frisch.
The group has held this egg hunt for decades, as the organization moves toward 60 of service in the borough. It is an important event for the benefit and delight of the community and serves to bond the generations of volunteers working with the organization.
The Recreation and Welfare Association has had hundreds of volunteers over the years and sponsors and coordinates the annual borough Halloween parade and holiday tree lighting and program. It also assists with the Community Days festival. One example of other service to the borough includes providing medical equipment for residents in need.
