Yadush key part of softball team
Whitehall’s Kate Yadush has always been somewhat ahead of the curve in her sports.
Along with playing soccer and softball, Yadush has excelled in skiing, a sport she began when she was 8-years-old.
Yadush was part of the Blue Mountain Racing team and also the Pennsylvania Alpine Racing Association (PARA), the latter in which she won a state competition in an under-12 bracket as a sixth grader.
But one sports chapter recently closed when she finished her last skiing race a few weeks ago.
“It was a sad chapter to close in my life,” said the senior. “My parents always went skiing, so they decided to teach me how, and I just fell in love with the sport. That eventually led me to join the Blue Mountain team.
“The last race of my career was special because it brought back thoughts of my entire ski racing career. Everyone stands at the finish line and celebrates each senior. It was really festive and emotional.
“But I am looking forward to what the future holds.”
Fortunately, the future may be just around the corner.
Yadush is an integral part of the Zephyrs’ plans for this season. A four-year starter, the first baseman hit .500 with 32 hits and 20 RBIs last season. Currently, she is hitting. 333.
Head coach Jeff Vivian has appreciated Yadush’s presence.
“Kate is a very special talent,” gushed Vivian. “She’s a three-sport athlete, but not in the traditional sense, playing soccer, ski racing and softball. One of the first things that you notice is her just raw power, but she has such a sweet swing and a great set of hands. As a staff, we have to make sure she’s protected in the lineup, we want to prevent teams pitching around her. That gives us the best chance at that big inning.
“This year as a senior you can see her taking a more active role in leading the team. She is more vocal with some of the younger players.
“We expect big things from her as we believe she is the best in the league. Can’t wait to see what she does this year.”
Whitehall will begin the week with an overall 2-2 record. The Zephyrs have dropped their last two games, recently a 6-1 decision to Parkland. They have games this week against Bethlehem Catholic Tuesday and Allen Thursday, but rain could be an issue.
Despite their recent slump, Yadush sees a tight bond among her teammates and an optimistic outlook. A major goal is to win a district title after they have been knocking on the door the past few years.
“Our team is a very close group, and we all get along,” she beamed. “The best thing is that we all have trust in each other to get the job done. I believe this is the year to finally win districts.
“It is our time after getting second place four years in a row.”
With some lofty expectations, Yadush hasn’t made any major changes for her final run, except to make the most of it.
“My approach this season isn’t any different than the years before,” she stated. “I work hard, support my teammates, and have fun.”
