NHS baseball team looks back on track

Being a senior, Northampton’s Mason Haupt already has been through this situation.

With a slight transition heading into this season, his team has overcome a slow start and appears to have found its niche.

The Konkrete Kids overcome an 11-3 loss to Emmaus followed by a 5-3 decision by Easton to respond with a 9-2 win over Allentown Centra Catholic and a 15-0 shutout of Southern Lehigh.

Haupt, who is hitting. 357 and has a 1.75 ERA with three strikeouts in four innings, sees his team back in the fold. As a team, the Konkrete Kids are hitting .321.

“Our bats started slow, but we continued to keep going at it,” offered Haupt. “Now, they are getting hot. We scored 24 runs in our last two games, and we plan to keep it going. We are starting to see our pitches, and we are not missing them.”

On the mound, the Kids have a team ERA of 4.67, which is an unorthodox number for a staff that usually has a low number. Senior Sam Erschen and sophomore Brady Simock have helped set the pace in the early going.

Haupt also is off to good start. Erschen and Haut combined on a one-hitter in the 9-2 win over Central, and Simock allowed two hits over four innings in the 15-0 shutout over Southern Lehigh.

“I feel like I am throwing pretty good at this point,” said Haupt. “My arm feels good, and my job is to throw strikes and let our defense do the rest.

“The rest of our pitchers are doing a good job. They are throwing strikes, and the defense behind them has been outstanding. We are playing good, and we have one goal in mind and that is to win a championship.”

Head coach Mick Sugra has been impressed with his team’s turnaround.

“We have started hitting,” said Sugra. “It was good to see our bats get going because we had some many guys struggling.

“Our pitching lately has been phenomenal. Erschen and Haupt threw a great game together, and Simock, our big lefty, had an outstanding game.

“We are starting to put things together.”

The Kids have a huge week ahead with games against Freedom Tuesday, Parkland Thursday, Pleasant Valley Friday, and Fleetwood Saturday.

However, rain is in the forecast for the entire week. Sugra has a realistic approach to the impending situation.

“We have enough arms, but we just don’t have enough umbrellas,” mused Sugra. “We may not be playing under Friday.”
