Residents voice recreation views

Whitehall Township residents were able to provide their feedback on the township’s parks, recreation and open space plan and a recreation center feasibility plan March 25. Representatives from Herbert, Rowland and Grubic Inc. and MKSD Architects were present at the recent meeting, held at Whitehall High School.

Currently, no plans have been made public, as the professionals are still collecting and analyzing data. The last parks and recreation plan was done 20 years ago. It was noted many township residents felt the township’s parks and recreation amenities are outdated.

Jeff Warren, Deb Rosene, Michael Frana and other township residents are brainstorming ideas to further connect trails, bike lanes and sidewalks in the township.

Residents were able to vote for amenities they would like to see in the township. A dog park, splash pad, pickleball courts, indoor recreation center and soccer fields were favored over disc golf and a nature play area. They also prioritized accessibility for all residents and a cohesive department.

An online survey will be available for about two weeks and can be found on the parks and recreation Facebook page. Nearly 200 people have already taken the survey, and the results so far show strong support for an indoor recreation center.

Another open house will be held further into the process.

Also present at the meeting were representatives from Cynthia Miles Adaptive Fund. The fund is currently raising money in hopes of building a flagship inclusive playground in Whitehall. The next fundraiser is a family-friendly walk and run, set for 10 a.m. April 13 at the track at WHS, 3800 Mechanicsville Road.
