Three Parkland girls earn medals in Hershey
Five Parkland wrestlers competed in the first PIAA Girls Championships last weekend, with three of them earning medals.
Junior Ella Hesener led the way with a fourth-place finish at 100 pounds, while sophomore Abigail Taylor finished sixth at 124 and teammate Sylvan Parham, a senior, took eighth place at 112.
Hesener won her opening bout by fall before getting pinned by eventual champ Valarie Solorio (Cannon-McMillan).
Hesener wrestled back with two straight pins to reach the consolation semifinal, where she earned a 5-3 decision over Kristen Walzer (Montour) to earn advance to the third-place bout. Miranda Lajevic (Knoch) pinned Hesener in 3:53 in the third-place match.
Taylor won two straight matches to reach the semifinals, where she dropped a 10-6 decision to eventual silver medalist Julissa Ortiz (Mariana Bracetti).
A 2-0 loss in the consolation final sent Taylor to the fifth-place bout, where she was edged 4-2 by Kelly Enterline (Greenville).
Parham lost to eventual champ Journie Rodriguez (JP McCaskey) in the first round, but wrestled back with two wins to get to the medal round. She finished eighth after a pair of third-period pins in the consolation round and seventh-place match.
Parkland senior Shannon Fratus also capped her high school career at the Giant Center in Hershey. She won her first bout at 170 by a 5-3 decision over Aambur Brletich (Northern York), but dropped her next two bouts and was eliminated.
Trojan senior Kelsey Gelb made it a trio of upperclassmen who qualified for the state championship meet. Gelb (155) pinned Avery Baldwin (Dallastown) in 4:43 in her opening bout, but lost her next two matches and was eliminated.
The Trojans finished eighth in the team standings after sweeping District 11 and Northeast Regional titles the previous two weeks.
Parkland head coach Anthony Shade was named Girls Coach of the Year for his team’s performance this season.
