There wasn’t anything more that the Parkland High School boys volleyball team could accomplish last season.
In 2023, the Trojans finished with a perfect 23-0 record and won the Eastern Pennsylvania Conference championship, District 11 title and were crowned PIAA state champions.
Parkland accomplished all it had set out for in the preseason and checked off all of its goals. It will now look to repeat that success in 2024.
Head coach Scott Trumbauer, entering his 23rd season at the helm, graduated key players in first-team all-state selection Chase Robbins and classmate Isaac Uthuppan.
But Trumbauer has a lot of experience and talent back to compete for championships this season. That includes seniors Brady Hayward (middle hitter), Ahmad Jaffer (libero), Luke Smith (middle/outside), Kumayl Soonasra (defensive specialist), William Stiles (setter) and Owen Rodgers (opposite hitter), along with junior Josh Nation (outside).
Smith was a second team all-state selection and both Stiles and Nation were honorable mention on the all-state team.
Some key newcomers expected to contribute include senior middle hitter Logan Nassry and sophomore setter Gabe Chase.
“We have a lot of big-game experience to fall on in the lineup,” said Trumbauer. “There is plenty of familiarity with each other. We have a large and deep roster, carrying 17 players. It’s the largest roster I’ve had.
“We need to maintain a high level of intensity at practice. We’ve been really anxious to get into the gym for this season pretty quickly after last season ended, knowing we had a large group of guys returning. Once the season got closer, the level of play at open gyms visibly increased. I think the guys are hungry and want to get things going.”
Other top contenders in the league and district according to Trumbauer include Emmaus and Whitehall.
Parkland begins its schedule at home against Liberty on Monday, March 18. The Trojans are then at Bethlehem Catholic that Friday.
