Cerimele earns three state medals
Sophia Cerimele doesn’t get a lot of rest during postseason swim meets.
At districts, the Parkland senior won three gold medals and a silver and added three more medals at states, which were held at Bucknell University last week.
On the opening night of the 3A state championships last Wednesday, Cerimele swam in three of the six events and showed no ill effects.
“I love the 200 [individual medley], so I was focusing on that and obviously the medley (relay) because that is always so exciting to be out there with the other girls and we knew we had a chance at medaling and to be able to do that was so exciting,” said Cerimele, who did not compete in swimming last season. “I didn’t really feel tired, but I think it was mainly adrenaline that kept me going, if I felt it at all it was in the butterfly.”
Cerimele captured a silver medal in the 200-IM and then added a fifth place medal in the 100-yard butterfly. In the butterfly, Cerimele was just 0.5 seconds out of fifth place in the preliminaries and then moved into fifth in the finals with a time of 56.36 seconds. Cerimele was a comfortable third in the IM with a time of 2:03.29.
The opening event was the 200-yard medley relay where Cerimele swam the butterfly and was teamed with freshman Sydney LaBaugh (backstroke) and sophomores Kelsey McPeek (breaststroke) and Milla Hahn (freestyle).
The team reached the medal round with a sixth-place finish in preliminaries. In the finals, the team cut nearly three seconds off its preliminary time and moved up to fourth place with a time of 1:44.33 to win pewter medals.
“We had good energy behind the blocks and that really drove us during the whole event,” said Hahn. “I feel like we have gotten better with every swim and it’s great to have all of the hard work pay off.”
Hahn finished 21st in the butterfly and 28th in the IM event on the opening day.
LaBaugh had a nice introduction to swimming at states when she finished 10th in the 100-yard backstroke and 14th in the 100-yard freestyle in the preliminaries. In the consolation round of the finals, the freshman held on to 10th in the backstroke and moved up to 13th in the 100-freestyle. While she did not collect a medal in either of the individual events, she did collect team points for Parkland in both.
McPeek also collected a medal when she finished with a 1:04.11 in the 100-yard breaststroke final to finish eighth. The medal was the first individual medal for the Parkland sophomore after she collected a medal as part of the 200-yard medley relay team a day earlier.
Parkland’s relay team of Cerimele, Hahn, Julianne Zaffiro, and McPeek took 12th in the 400-yard freestyle relay to wrap up the championships. The team had placed 12th in the preliminaries and were unable to move up in the standings despite cutting 01.89 seconds off their time in the finals.
As a team, Parkland finished seventh with 92 points. North Allegheny (211 points), Upper Dublin (203), Hatboro-Horsham (164), State College (139), and Fox Chapel (99) finished ahead of the Trojans. Among other local teams, East Stroudsburg South (33) finished 21st, Freedom (12) tied for 40th, Emmaus (4) placed in a tie for 55th and Stroudsburg tied for 64th with one point.
