The basis for the story is the fairy tale “Cendrillon, ou la petite pantoufle de verre” (“Cinderella, or The Little Glass Slipper”) by 17th-century French author Charles Perrault.
The television special received three 1957 Primetime Emmy Award nominations. Two televised versions followed in 1965 and 1997, as well as stage productions.
Notable songs include “The Sweetest Sounds,” “In My Own Little Corner,” “Ten Minutes Ago,” “Do I Love You Because You’re Beautiful?” and “A Lovely Night.”
